About Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers are made of hyaluronic acid. This is a naturally occurring substance within the body that is found in the dermis, or the deep layers of the skin. One of its functions is to keep skin smooth and healthy by helping it retain water. As we age our body’s production of hyaluronic acid gradually declines, resulting in visible signs of ageing. Natural lines and wrinkles deepen; lips lose their fullness; lines appear around the mouth and nose and cheeks lose volume and get a sunken and hollow appearance.
Dermal Fillers are a man-made, non-animal substance that mimics the body’s natural depleted hyaluronic acid. The fillers provide support and structure to the skin, giving it a plumped and youthful appearance. The non-permanent fillers provide safe, long-lasting and natural looking results. How do dermal fillers work?
When injected into the targeted area, dermal fillers plump and volumize your skin to give it a smooth, well-defined and youthful appearance. They allow for the result to look natural and the dermal filler will biodegrade after a few months.
Don’t confuse dermal fillers with anti-wrinkle injections (Botox®, Bocouture®). Although both procedures involve injections, anti-wrinkle injections are most often injected around the forehead and wrinkles around the eyes (crow’s feet) to stop muscle movement that results in wrinkles. They do not enable the plumping effect dermal fillers enjoy.
Because they work in different manners, many people elect to get both anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers as the combination can produce a remarkably younger-looking face.

How is the dermal filler treatment done?
Your physician will inject the dermal filler beneath the wrinkle with a very fine needle. You may have a small injection to numb the area before the treatment is administered. The procedure will take between 20 and 30 minutes depending on the number and extent of areas being treated. You will be able to go about your day immediately after treatment.
How do dermal fillers differ from anti-wrinkle injections?
While both dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle injections are injected into the skin, they work in wholly different ways. Anti-wrinkle injections work by relaxing muscles to give lines and wrinkles a smoother appearance. Dermal fillers provide volume and thus help in sculpting your face. We provide both services at The Bleu Clinic and your free consultation will help determine which procedure would be best suited to achieve your goals.
Does the treatment hurt?
Your physician will apply a topical anaesthetic to the area before injecting your dermal fillers so that you are comfortable during your treatment. The Bleu Clinic uses the Juvéderm® range of fillers many of which also contain a local anaesthetic to minimize any discomfort. This anaesthetic will wear off later on and it is rare for any discomfort to be felt afterwards but you may experience some tenderness, redness or swelling which will disappear within a few days. You can discuss aftercare with your physician at your free consultation.
How long will it take before the effects are visible?
The effects are visible immediately. No recovery time will be required and you will be able to return to your activities straight away. There may be some tenderness, swelling or redness after the treatment. These will subside after a few days.
How much Dermal filler will I need?
This really depends on the number of areas you would like treated and the results you are looking to achieve. This can be discussed with your clinician at your free consultation. Typically, treatment for nasolabial (nose to mouth lines) require 1-2 mls, marrionette lines require 1ml, lips require 0.5-1ml.
How long will the effects last?
Depending on the area treated, your skin, and the injection technique, Juvederm will last 6 to 9 months. In some cases duration of the effects can be a bit shorter or longer.
Are there any side effects?
You may experience some discomfort at the time of your dermal filler injection but your physician will numb the area to make you more comfortable. After your treatment, you may experience some tenderness, redness or swelling which will disappear within 2 days. Very occasionally patients can suffer some bruising at the injection site. You can discuss this with your physician on your free consultation.
What about aftercare?
You can go back to work immediately after your treatment and you can apply mineral make-up over the treated area. We advise that you do not have a facial or similar treatment that may disturb the products or expose the treated areas to strong sunlight for 2-3 days.Your physician will leave you with recommendations on how best to treat your skin in the hours and days following your dermal filler treatment.
